Bayern Munich suffered a shock in the first-leg Champions League quarter-final tie against FC Porto as they were defeated 3-1 by the Portuguese side on Wednesday.
Porto took the lead in the third minute of the game through a Ricardo Quaresma penalty, after Manuel Neuer tripped striker Jackson Martinez in the box. Winger Quaresma then dispossessed Dante before running through on goal and calmly slotting a second into the net seven minutes later.
Thiago Alcantara pulled a goal back for Bayern, but Martinez grabbed a brilliant third to provide Porto with a two-goal advantage heading into the return leg that takes place on 21 April, the BBC reported.
Porto hold a significant advantage in the tie as they aim to reach their first semifinal since winning the competition in 2004 under then boss Jose Mourinho. Their performance was built on hard work and pressure, before moving the ball quickly to the front, but Bayern's shambolic defending helped them too.
The Germans, who boasted an 11-game unbeaten run in Portugal, managed to pull an away goal, but missed key players including wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben, as well as midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Porto manager Julen Lopetegui said that it was fundamental that they tried their best to impose ourselves on Bayern and not give them a chance to settle, adding that they are facing one of the strongest Bayern teams in history, admitting that the hardest part would be in Munich.
Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola said that there's still another leg, adding that his side is a bit upset but insisted that they have six days to analyze it. He admitted that it's a tough result to take into the second leg, but claimed that they would give it a go.
