President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday condemned the serial blasts which occurred in Patna, and said the nation must remain united in its firm resolve to fight against all forms of terror and violence which have no place in a civilized society.

Expressing his deep concern over the incident, President Mukherjee conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and prayers for the full recovery of those injured in the incident.

He called upon people to maintain calm and restraint.

President Mukherjee also called upon concerned authorities to carry out speedy investigations in order to bring the perpetrators of the act to justice.

Earlier in the day, five people were killed and 72 injured in the serial blasts of Patna, which occurred ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) rally at Gandhi Maidan today.

Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde confirmed that National Security Guards (NSG) have been sent to Patna via a special aircraft, in addition to a team of National Investigation Agency (NIA), who have been sent to assist the Bihar Police in further investigations.
