After the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) decided to rechristen Race Course Road, where the Prime Minister of India resides, as Lok Kalyan Marg, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has also initiated a process of changing of the name of the Race Course Metro station to Lok Kalyan Marg Metro station as per the directive of the government.
Initially, the station name boards will be changed immediately followed by gradual changes in the automatic announcement system, maps etc as these involve software updates among others.
Earlier, a special meeting was convened to have a discussion on changing the name of Race Course Road to Lok Kalyan Marg, after New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi, who had earlier written to the government that the current name of the road does not match with the Indian culture, moved a proposal in this regard.
Earlier there were speculations to rename 7 RCR to Ekatma Marag to pay tribute to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya.
Last year, Aurangzeb Road was renamed after former president APJ Abdul Kalam. The change was recommended by BJP's Mahesh Girri, who said Mughal ruler Aurangzeb was a cruel figure in history.
The demand to rename Akbar Road to Maharana Pratap Marg was also raise, but the government overruled it.
