Russia has deployed a ruthless new cyber weapon in an attempt to derail Ukraine's computer networks.
The malware, dubbed the 'Snake', could be used to shut off civilian power or water supplies and cripple banks.
The cyber attack can even blow up industrial sites that depend on computer-controlled safety programmes.
According to the Daily Star, the cyber weapon, also known as Ouroboros after the serpent of Greek mythology that swallowed its own tail, is already blamed for infecting scores of Ukrainian computer networks.
It gives operators unrestricted access to networks for surveillance purposes.
The malware has infected networks run by the Kiev government and other important organisations.
Ukraine is the primary target, with 32 recorded instances, 22 of which have occurred since January 2013.
Dave Garfield, managing director for cyber security at BAE, said that Ukraine was top of the list and increasing, the report added.
