Russia has imposed retaliatory sanction on senior US officials just moments after President Barack Obama slapped penalties on 20 Russians inside and outside the government.
The move comes as diplomatic efforts over Ukraine unraveled into a long-distance tit for tat.
According to Fox News, the sanctions imposed by Russia would bar nine American officials from entering Moscow.
The US officials slammed with sanctions include House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio; Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.; and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
According to the report, for the time being, Obama said the U.S. will levy sanctions on more 'senior officials of the Russian government' and 'a number of individuals' supporting Russian leadership.
The new penalties mark the second round of economic sanctions the U.S. has levied on Russia this week.
The move came despite warnings by the West that Crimea's annexation violated international law and would not be recognized by the world.
