S.A prosecution authority tight-lipped on BBC documentary on Dewani murder

The National Prosecution Authority (NPA) of South Africa has denied commenting on the BBC's documentary programme about the Shrien Dewani honeymoon murder case.

The BBC documentary reportedly questions the police investigation into the case, in which the Brit-American businessman is alleged to have had his wife Anni shot dead during their honeymoon in South Africa.

According to News24, the BBC programme titled, 'The Honeymoon Murder: Who Killed Anni?' claims to have obtained secret police files and commissioned forensic experts to review the entire case.

The programme, which is set to air this week, aims to expose 'fundamental mistakes' in the police investigation and the interpretation of forensic evidence.

Western Cape director of public prosecutions Rodney de Kock, in his letter to the BBC's Panorama editor, Tom Giles, said that it would be improper for the NPA to engage on the merits of the case.

De Kock said that to do so will be to subject Dewani to a trial by media, a concept foreign to the Republic of South Africa and a practice that will violate Dewani's right to a fair trial.

Meanwhile, ballistics experts have claimed that the bullet that killed the 28-year-old hit her left hand, went into her chest and through her body, causing fatal neck injuries, supporting the theory that Anni was shot during a struggle.

The report added that Dewani, who has repeatedly denied plotting to kill his wife, is undergoing treatment in the UK for post-traumatic stress disorder.
