Satish Upadhyay roughed up as BJP workers clash for tickets at party office

Bharatiya Janata Party's Delhi unit chief Satish Upadhyay was on Tuesday roughed up at the party headquarters in the national capital as clashes broke out between party workers over the ticket distribution for the upcoming Delhi assembly polls.

Earlier in the day, Upadhyay's supporters had thronged the BJP headquarters, showing their resentment that the Delhi unit chief had not been given a seat.

Upadhyay, however, made it clear that it was his conscious decision to not contest the upcoming elections from any seat, adding that he wanted to concentrate on organising political campaigns for his fellow candidates.

"I have to fight over 70 seats. I understand that some party workers might feel upset over my not contesting from a seat, but we have to work together and have to ensure the party's success under Kiran ji's leadership. We will definitely win by a majority in the city and will form the government," Upadhyay told ANI.

Former BJP MLA Jai Bhagwan Agarwal's supporters also resorted to blocking traffic in Rohini's Sai Baba Chowk, in protest against the BJP ticket given to Vijender Gupta.

Meanwhile, Congress leader PC Chacko stated that he was not surprised over the incidents.

"It is bound to happen in party like BJP. The leadership of BJP is disappointed this is just the beginning," he said.

The elections for the 70-member Delhi Assembly will be held in a single phase on February 7, with the counting of votes set to take place on February 10.
