The Supreme Court today asked the Central Government to fill up two vacancies lying in the National Commission for the Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) soon.
A bench of the apex court, headed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Jagdish Singh Khehar and also comprising of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and D.Y. Chandrachud, passed the order after hearing on a contempt petition in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) related to the defunct NCSK.
The Supreme Court passed the order after hearing a plea filed by social activist and Supreme Court lawyer Radhakanta Tripathy.
The lawyer had filed the contempt petition before the Supreme Court stating the inaction, negligence and failure of the Government in constituting the NCSK.
Despite the court's November 25, 2016-order to fill up the vacancies of the NCSK within two months from the date of the order, the entire commission was lying vacant.
The apex court had, earlier on March 10, issued a notice to the Central Government on the contempt petition filed by Tripathy.
