Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has reportedly said that he hopes to begin a domestic enquiry into alleged war crimes during the country's civil war within a month.

According to the BBC, he said that advice from United Nations investigators would be taken into account but added that there was no need for them to be involved in the probe, despite international pressure.

The Sri Lankan army defeated the Tamil Tiger rebels in 2009, putting an end to the 26-year long civil war. Both sides have been accused of committing atrocities.

Sirisena said that he hoped that the committee, which examines the alleged war crime charges, would work "efficiently, in a balanced, legal and impartial manner.
