Srinagar shutdown as separatists observe 'Black Day'

Separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani has called a complete shutdown of Srinagar on Sunday to observe 'Black Day', in protest against the day Indian Army entered Jammu and Kashmir in 1947.

"On today's date, October 27, the Army was deployed in Jammu and Kashmir and that is why Syed Ali Geelani of the Hurriyat group has called for a strike. The entire Srinagar is closed and all the shops are closed. No business is functional today," said a resident of the area, Mohammad Hafiz Mir.

Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir Bar High Court Association also extended their full support to the shutdown call by separatist leaders of Hurriyat Conference outfit.

The group said that at a time when India was trying to become a permanent member in the United Nations, it was important for the country to first implement the Security Council resolutions in Kashmir.

The observance of "Black Day" is in order to express the separatists' disapproval of the Indian Army entering into Kashmir on 27 October 1947.

The Indian Army sent forces to Jammu and Kashmir after the state acceded to India to fight the 'raiders' from Pakistan who invaded the State. The troops landed in Srinagar airfield on October 27.
