MK Stalin, son of late Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president Karunanidhi, on Wednesday alleged that the State government is trying to create chaos and appealed to people to maintain calm and cooperate with the police to ensure that everyone gets to pay homage to 'Kalaignar'.

Addressing the media at Rajaji Hall, Karunanidhi's apparent political heir said, " Those who are in power are trying to create chaos, but you have all shown the strength of the cadres. I appeal to everyone to maintain peace. Please clear the way, so that by 4 pm, procession can commence."

"I ask you all not to come and rush. I request the cadres to remain calm. I do not want anything for myself. All I want is a fitting tribute to Kalaignar," he added.

Earlier in the day the DMK working president was seen breaking down after the Madras High Court paved way for Karunanidhi's burial to take place at Chennai's Marina Beach.

The order came hours after the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led state government had denied permission for Karunanidhi's burial at Marina Beach.

Besides a number of known faces from all walks of life, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also visited Rajaji Hall to pay homage to Karunanidhi.

The Central government has declared one-day national mourning in honour of the DMK leader.

The coffin of the leader bore the words, 'A person who continued to work without rest, now takes rest.'

Five-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Karunanidhi breathed his last on Tuesday at Chennai's Kauvery Hospital. His funeral will be held with full state honours.
