Passengers on board a research ship that has been trapped in Antarctic ice for nearly a week will be evacuated by helicopter, Russian officials said.

Many of the passengers and crew will be rescued using a Chinese helicopter after the latest bid to free the vessel failed.

According to Sky News, the MV Akademik Shokalskiy ship has been stuck since Christmas Eve after blizzard winds pushed sea ice around the ship, freezing it in place.

The ship is not in danger of sinking, and there are weeks' of supplies for those on board, but the vessel cannot move.
