The Supreme Court on Monday said that cases relating to unauthorized use of sirens and beacons should be dealt with strictly and exemplary fines should be imposed on those who violate the rule.

The Court has asked the Centre to frame rules to restrict the use of red beacon and siren to only persons holding constitutional posts.

According to reports, a bench of justices G S Singhvi and V Gopala Gowda asked the government to impose heavy and exemplary fine on its wrong use and granted two weeks time to Centre to respond to it.

"It is a menace to society", the bench said while referring to the problems faced by people when VIPs with high security cover move in vehicles with red beacon and siren.

The bench was hearing a PIL filed by a resident of Uttar Pradesh on misuse of red beacon.

Reports state that the court said if the central government fails in making changes in the rules, it will pass the order.

The apex court further said that only a few people should be allowed to use beacons and sirens on their vehicles, while the rest should remove them.

The Supreme Court had in April directed the Centre and states to amend the Motor Vehicles Act to ensure that the use of red beacons on official vehicles is restricted.
