Sydney's Austereo Radio Network might lose their broadcasting license over the infamous royals hospital prank call, it has been reported.

The High Court has handed down a decision that found the broadcast media watchdog has the power to make an adverse finding against a licencee, News.com.au reported.

In the call in December 2012, 2DayFM announcers Michael Christian and Mel Greig, called up London's King Edward VII Hospital pretending to be the Queen and Prince of Wales and seeking information about the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge.

The radio jockeys managed to dupe nurse Jacintha Saldanha who transferred their call to another nurse who divulged private information about the duchess, however she committed suicide after truth behind the prank was revealed.

ACMA sought to take action against the station for breaching a condition of its licence which stipulates that it would not use its broadcasting service in the commission of an offence.
