American Jason Dufner showed his toughness by winning his first golf major, two years after being beaten for the title in a playoff, taking out the US PGA Championship by two shots.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Dufner bogeyed the final two holes but fired a final round two-under 68 at Oak Hill Country Club to conclude on 10-under-par 270, two clear of fellow citizen and 2003 champion Jim Furyk who failed to mount any pressure at the end.

Masters champion Adam Scott ended as the highest Australian, five shots behind Dufner in a tie for fifth after a 70 containing five birdies and five bogeys, the report said.

Fellow Australian Jason Day caused plenty of excitement with a run of seven birdies in 10 holes in a 67 to be tied eighth, the report added.

Dufner said that he could not believe it was happening to him and to come back from a couple of years ago felt really good.

World No.1 Tiger Woods ended with a 70 to be four-over for the championship, well off the pace but he was better than world No.2 Phil Mickelson who finished with a 72 to be 12-over, the report further said.
