Football may rue GLT introduction as 'monster unleashed' following cricket's DRS scarring

Football might regret the day the goal-line technology (GLT) was introduced as a 'monster unleashed on the game' and go down a nightmare path in the same way as cricket has been scarred by the Decision Review System (DRS), according to a report.

According to the Daily Express, cricket is the prime example of the fact that technology can be become an unstoppable force for bad once it begins to be used in sports, adding that the introduction of third umpire TV reviews of close run-out calls could not be faulted of itself.

The report further said that same will be true of the issue of GLT in football concerning the relatively rare cases where it is unclear whether or not the ball has crossed the line, adding that soon the GLT will be called to assist with offside decisions as well as handballs and tackles in the penalty box.

Backing India's reluctance to use DRS in their game as 'wise', the report also said that the technology is 'awful' for several reasons, one of which is that the technology has proved far from credible.

According to the report, another problem is that the officials interpreting the technology are just as fallible as on-field umpires, adding that the most disturbing consequence has been to alter the dynamic between umpire and player.

The report further said that cricketers are now encouraged to challenge official decisions, which challenges the respect and authority of umpires at all levels of the game, adding that it feared that the same might occur in football, following which, the result will be a 'complete disaster' just like cricket.
