Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc will be out of action for the next three wickets after wounding his leg in a training mishap in Sydney.

The 26-year-old speed merchant picked up 30 stitches after "suffering a deep laceration to his left shin" when he collided with some training equipment.

Reflecting on the bowler's injury, Cricket Australia chief medical officer John Orchard said Starc will remain in hospital for the next few days in order to minimise movement to his leg.

Orchard added that Starc will use an extension brace for the next 2-3 weeks until his stitches are removed, Sport24 reported.

According to team doctors, the pace spearhead will be fit for the start of the home summer series in a month's time.

He was one of the few Australian players who produced an encouraging performance in his side's 3-0 Test series whitewash in Sri Lanka, topping the wicket list with 24 at a staggering average of 16.

Starc endured a injury-plagued season, having suffered a stress fracture in his foot during the inaugural day-night Test against New Zealand in Adelaide last November before missing Australia's tour of New Zealand ahead of the World Twenty20 in India in March.

The pace spearhead, however, returned to cricket with a bang, dominating the ODI tri-series in the Caribbean and featuring in every match of Australia's Qantas Tour of Sri Lanka, including setting a new world record for the fastest bowler to bag 100 wickets.
