'Troubled' Rooney accepts staying at Man U although tensions linger

Troubled Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has reportedly accepted staying in the Old Trafford side this summer and agreed not to push the issue any further this week with a transfer request.

According to The Independent, Rooney has privately responded to Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho's ultimatum to make clear his intentions within '24-48 hours' by accepting to stay on at United, with the transfer window closing on Monday night.

The report further said that Rooney is aware that United boss David Moyes, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and the club's owners the Glazers agree on the fact that he will not be sold to Chelsea at any price this week despite having only two years left on his contract, for which he hesitated to burn his bridges by pushing hard for a transfer.

However, the report said that there are still tensions over what Rooney regards as unfair treatment in recent months, chiefly the assertion by the former manager Sir Alex Ferguson that he had asked for a transfer, along with Moyes' remark that Rooney would be a back-up for when Robin van Persie is injured.

But, the report added that Moyes seemed to have backtracked from his remarks, recently saying that the quality of Rooney's performance had not surprised him and that the player was looking 'leaner' than he had done in the recent past.

After the match on Monday, United defender Nemanja Vidic said that there had never been any doubt that Rooney would get the positive reception from the home fans at Old Trafford that he received on Monday night.
