The South African Press Association's announcement of its closure, stating that it would send its last story on March 31, has elicited a heartwarming tribute from Twitteratis on the platform.

The announcement came as the board decided to liquidate the company and cease all operations. People tweeted their reactions and said that the closure was a huge loss to global media. They also thanked Sapa for its invaluable contribution for 76 years, News24 reported.

While Geoffrey York wrote, it was the "death of a South African institution", Nic Dawes, editor of Mail and Guardian, said, "Shutting down @SapaNews = Media houses jamming their own signal."

Meanwhile, the Congress of SA Trade Unions expressed solidarity with the Sapa media workers.

Another user said that closing of Sapa News was a sad chapter for journalism, as its voice had been a crucial ingredient in the health of their democracy.

Many other Twitter users described the closure as the "end of an era.
