Uber Cab rape case: Radio Cab Association calls for better legislation

The Radio Cab Association of Tuesday called for better legislature and rules, even as the Delhi Government banned all web-based taxi services from plying in the national capital, following the rape of a passenger by an Uber Cab employee.

"Everything is procedure-driven in our company. After a sad incident like this, we will try to bring in more improvements, especially for ladies and children. In the long term, we need better rules and better legislature. If the government is able to push out these norms and guidelines at the earliest, then I think all this will be streamlined," Radio Cab Association president Kunal Lalani told the media after a meeting of all the heads of all the major taxi companies.

Meanwhile, G Cabs CEO Babita Nihal said the Uber Cab incident was traceable to no connection being established between the taxi and a physical office.

"People erroneously think that all cab companies work on same protocols. Our company fulfils all the norms laid down by the Transport Authority. Our cabs are equipped with GPS, GPRS, 24-hours assistance and panic buttons. By pressing the panic button, the customer can immediately be connected to our call centre," she said.

"The main fault during the recent mishap was that no connection was being established to reach any responsible person. Keeping aside the customer's safety and creating a mushroom market is not acceptable," she added.

On Friday, an Uber cab driver allegedly raped a 27-year-old woman passenger, resulting in the Delhi government banning Uber from functioning in the national capital even as the company issued a statement assuring its full co-operation to help the victim and her family in their recovery.

According to reports, the cab driver was had been convicted for a similar crime in 2011 and had spent over seven months in prison. However, he was later acquitted in that case.
