Twelve militants belonging to the Rabha National Security Force (RNSF) and the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) surrendered with arms to police and army personnel in Assam's Goalpara district on Monday.

Three of the surrendered militants belonged to the ULFA and the remaining nine were from the RNSF.

The militants surrendered with five 9mm pistols, two country made revolvers and five country made rifles apart from two kilograms of explosives in Goalpara district.

Superintendent of police (SP) in Goalpara, Shyamal Saikiya said that twelve militants had surrendered with arms of their own accord.

"They have surrendered on their own accord, which is why we welcome this step taken by them. Through this surrender process if they join the mainstream of society and contribute for its development, then it will benefit the entire state," said Saikiya.

The surrender of the militants will help the administration as the cadres of the ULFA have been active in Goalpara in the recent past.
