Former England player Michael Vaughan has urged England captain Alastair Cook to read pitch conditions better and adapt, particularly when it is flat and the ball is not swinging.

In his column published in the Sydney Morning Herald, Vaughan said that the team could have been more creative and inventive on days one and two at Old Trafford, and instead of bowling conventional, top of off stump, to orthodox fields, bowlers could have gone short and alternatively bowled full and straight.

Vaughan said that bowlers could bowl Yorkers for three overs, or go wide of off stump and get Clarke to chase one with seven-two off-side field, adding that four or five plans were needed when the opposition batted well on a flat pitch.

However, the former player had good words to say too about both Clarke and Cook, adding that both were extremely good batsmen who knew how to bat with the pressure of captaincy.
