Australian batsman David Warner has been summoned by Cricket New South Wales to discuss why he did not play for club Randwick Petersham on Saturday, despite being selected.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, chief executive Andrew Jones said that appropriate action, if any, would only be taken after that.

The left-hander's defence is likely to be based around having not had a chance to bat all week, primarily due to Cricket Australia reviews and sponsor engagements, and missing out on Friday afternoon due to rain, the report said.

He may argue that doing batting training on Saturday was better preparation to face the Bushrangers than fielding in club cricket, the report added.

Irrespective of the merits of Warner's defence, his biggest problem is likely to be that he defied a Cricket NSW directive, the report further said.

Randwick Petersham coach Bill Anderson had sympathy for Warner and said that in his opinion, the cricketer had a good reason not to play, which was that he needed some more batting under his belt.
