We will go to the streets to get action against Bharti: Congress leader Lovely

Reacting to a recent raid conducted by Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) chief Arvinder Singh Lovely on Thursday said that law was equal for everyone, and that the Congress would go to the streets if required to ensure appropriate remedial action against Bharti.

"All party members met the Lieutenant Governor today. We requested him to investigate this case. The law should be the same for everyone, and we will go to the streets if required for action to be taken against him," Lovely told media.

"The Delhi Police should immediately take action against him. If it was a common man, the Delhi Police would have arrested him long back. But, because a minister who is backed by a lot of powerful people is involved in this case, they could not do anything,"

"If the government, which is responsible for keeping a check on the law themselves, acts in such a way, what are we to expect?" he asked.

"We are not holding grudges against anyone, but the law needs to be followed. There should be no prejudices. We have supported them on the 18 issues related to the welfare of the people, but we will not support them on something like this," he added.

Somnath Bharti, who has been facing severe criticism for leading a midnight raid on the house of a Ugandan woman, had alleged that a sex trade and drug peddling racket was flourishing in the locality with the help of foreign nationals.

Bharti and his supporters have been accused of illegally detaining several Ugandan women and forcing them to give medical tests.

Women rights activists have been demanding Bharti's resignation, calling his actions 'irresponsible and unjustified'.
