Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday criticised the Central government and asserted that he will continue to play an effective role in opposing the Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government.

Speaking to reporters about downgrading his security, he said, "It is another step to see that I don't criticise too much and I do not play an effective role in opposing the Modi government. But such steps will not deter me and I will continue fighting with this communal and divisive politics. India is a democratic country and we want democracy to prevail."

He also criticised the Citizenship Amendment Act and said that it was against the secularism of country.

"Why are Hindu-Muslims being distinguished in CAA. Hindus are secular and broad-minded but the government is narrow-minded and is deviating from the basic principle of Hinduism for political gains", he stated.

He also hailed the Supreme Court order regarding internet prohibition and said, "People of India still have confidence that for freedom and right to dissent against government, which has been granted by the constitution, the judiciary will be there to safeguard it".

Taking about the controversy over 'Chapaak' movie after Deepika Padukone's visit to JNU, he said, "Everybody has right to express his or her view and can express solidarity with one group or another. So she also has this right and it is part of our democracy".
