Last year, the German auto major Volkswagen had unveiled its first compact SUV concept, the Taigun at the Sao Paulo Motor Show. If rumors are to be believed, the production version of the Volkswagen's new small crossover will be unveiled at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. The vehicle will be launched in the Brazilian market by 2015-16.
We reported earlier that VW will soon start developing its compact SUV Taigun. However, reports are also there that the vehicle will not make its way to the U.S. as Compact SUV segment accounts big in terms of sales in developing nations, specially the Asian and South African countries. It is speculated that Volkswagen is planning to assemble the Taigun at its two manufacturing facilities to meet the demands of people in many developing nations. For left hand drive nations, the compact crossover will be developed at its Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the right-hand drive Taigun will be produced here in India at its manufacturing unit in Pune.
The Taigun is based on Volkswagen's new small family platform structure (PQ12), which also underpinned the company's small car Up!. The compact crossover is likely to house a petrol and a diesel three-cylinders engine, mated to either a standard manual or optional dual-clutch gearbox. The company will probably develop a natural gas variant of the crossover, however, it is yet to be disclosed whether electric or gasoline-electric hybrids will also be developed.
Under the hood, the Volkswagen Taigun is expected to be powered by the 1.0-litre, three cylinder direct-injection gasoline engine that develops 109bhp. This engine will also power the upcoming Up! GT.
