Key benchmark indices edged higher in early trade tracking positive lead from Asian markets and Wall Street. At 9:16 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex was up 177.43 points or 0.66% at 27,256.94. The 50-unit CNX Nifty was up 32.50 points or 0.4% at 8,222.20.
Broad market depicted strength. On BSE, 614 shares gained and 178 shares fell. A total of 34 shares were unchanged. The BSE Mid-Cap index was up 0.36%. The BSE Small-Cap index was up 0.43%. Both these indices underperformed the Sensex.
In overseas stock markets, Chinese stocks led gains for Asian markets. US stock markets closed higher on Friday, 9 October 2015, helped by airlines and industrial companies.
Closer home, IT major Infosys rose 3.4% at Rs 1,207.55. The stock hit a high of Rs 1,219 so far during the day, which is a record high for the counter. The stock hit a low of Rs 1,167 so far during the day. Infosys' consolidated net profit rose 12.14% to Rs 3398 crore on 8.92% growth in revenue to Rs 15635 crore in Q2 September 2015 over Q1 June 2015. The result was announced during market hours today, 12 October 2015.
Tata Steel rose 1.71%. The company announced after market hours on Friday, 9 October 2015 that its hot metal production rose 3% to 2.66 million tonnes in Q2 September 2015 over Q2 September 2014. Crude steel production rose 11% to 2.51 million tonnes in Q2 September 2015 over Q2 September 2014. Saleable steel production rose 9% to 2.41 million tonnes in Q2 September 2015 over Q2 September 2014. Deliveries rose 11% to 2.33 million tonnes in Q2 September 2015 over Q2 September 2014.
Among the key macro economic data, the government is scheduled to unveil the consumer price index (CPI) data for the month of September 2015 after market hours today, 12 October 2015. The all-India general CPI inflation was nearly flat 3.66% in August 2015 compared with 3.69% (revised) reading in July 2015.
The government will also release the industrial production data for August 2015 after market hours today, 12 October 2015. Industrial production rose at 4.22% in July 2015 compared with growth of 4.36% in June 2015.
