According to the latest Agri ministry data, the total area sown to all rabi crops stood at 537.21 lakh hectare (ha) as on 20th December 2019, up by 6.60% compared to 504.69 lakh hectare a year ago. Area under wheat, the primary rabi crop, stood at 278 lakh hectare so far in this season, up 28% compared to the same time last year.
However, acreage under pulses remained flat at 131.46 lakh ha. Area under the key pulses crop Chan or Gram edged up by 2.60% to 89.28 lakh ha. Area under coarse cereals edged up by 3.60% to 43.70 lakh ha while that under oilseeds fell 1.28% to 71.79 lakh ha. In oilseeds, Mustard crop was sown on 63.92 lakh ha, down 1.40% on year.
