Over 10 people were killed Sunday by suspected members of Boko Haram in Nigeria's northeastern region bordering Cameroon, Xinhua reported.

The incident occurred when a group of gunmen launched a highway raid on motorists early in the morning at Logumani town near the border, said witnesses.

The attack was, however, not confirmed by either local authorities or the militant sect of Boko Haram, which had suffered a deadly blow only days ago in the northeastern state of Borno.

On Tuesday, the Nigerian military had announced having killed 40 Boko Haram fighters during security operations.

The Boko Haram sect seeks to enshrine the Islamic sharia law into the constitution.
