Seventy-three per cent organisations in India, another 73 per cent in the US and 82 per cent in France, believe that user identity management is more difficult in the Cloud than the on-premises environment, said a study by digital security giant Gemalto and the Ponemon Institute on Wednesday.

Despite the popularity of Cloud usage, the study found there is a wide gap in the level of security precautions applied by companies in different markets even as 95 per cent of companies have adopted Cloud services.

"While it's good to see some countries like Germany taking the issue of Cloud security seriously, there is a worrying attitude emerging elsewhere," Jason Hart, CTO, Data Protection at Gemalto, said in a statement.

"This may be down to nearly half believing the Cloud makes it more difficult to protect data, when the opposite is true," Hart said.

Fifty-seven per cent global organisations also believe that using the Cloud makes them more likely to fall foul of privacy and data protection regulations which is marginally down from 2016's findings of 62 per cent.

Only 25 per cent of IT and IT security practitioners revealed they are confident they know all the Cloud services their business is using.

Meanwhile, organisations admitted that on an average, only 40 per cent of the data stored in the Cloud is secured with encryption and key management solutions.
