Argetina's media has expressed discontent after their home defeat against Ecuador in the first match of the 2018 World Cup South American qualifiers.

Despite Argentina attacking the Ecuadorian goal, they could not score their defenders were shaky. Ecuador won 2-0 on Thursday, reports Xinhua.

"Great disappointment was felt in Monumental Stadium. Argentina was confused and lost against Ecuador," said Infonews on Friday, a local news agency, adding that "the Argentine team could not impose its game and Ecuador scored two goals in two minutes."

MinutoUno, a local daily, said it is the first time Argentina loses in Monumental since the 1993 defeat against Colombia with a 0-5 score.

The daily added "Argentina has a difficult path towards Russia 2018, affected by the absence of its captain and main star, Lionel Messi."

Clarin daily said "Ecuador surprised defeating a poor Argentina in Monumental Stadium," while La Nacion daily said "A historic beat. Argentina loses 2-0 in its debut," adding that "A night to be forgotten. Aguero was injured on minutes."

Sports daily Ole, more dramatically, said "Ecuaterror. Argentina suffers a great defeat in the beginning of the Qualifying Tournament against Ecuador."

Telam news agency, in a more calm way, said "An unimpressive Argentina was defeated by Ecuador in Monumental Stadium."

Sports experts said it was one of the worst performances of the team led by coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino.

Argentina will face Paraguay on October 13.
