The army was on Wednesday deployed in violence-hit Ahmedabad and a flag march carried out, an army spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said around five columns of the army -- drawn from units in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar -- were deployed in the city.

"Army has been deployed in east and west Ahmedabad city and a flag march is being conducted," a spokesperson said, while refusing to divulge the exact number of soldiers due to security reasons.

A state-wide shutdown was observed in Gujarat on Wednesday, a day after a Patidar mega-rally was held here demanding reservations in education and jobs for the influential Patel community.
