Czech tennis player Tomas Berdych entered for the second round of the Madrid Open on Monday, while Frenchman Gael Monfils was eliminated.
Berdych, who was a finalist in Madrid in 2012, defeated Uzbek Denis Istomin 6-4, 6-4. The Czech produced his sixth victory over Istomin in six games and is set to meet Dutchman Robin Haase in the next round, reports Efe.
Meanwhile, Monfils fell against his compatriot Gilles Simon 0-6, 6-0, 7-6 (0).
Simon, world No.32, will play the next round against the winner of the game between Spaniard Feliciano Lopez and American Ernesto Escobedo.
Romanian Marius Copil beat Spanish Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-6 (6), 4-6, 7-6 (9) in two hours and 52 minutes.
Copil, ranked 104th in the world, will now play world no. 1 Briton Andy Murray in the next round.
