Seoul, Oct 16 (IANS/EFE) A mobile operator in South Korea announced Thursday it has developed a technology that combines the frequencies of WiFi networks and LTE (Long-Term Evolution) to increase the speed of data transmission.
LG Uplus, the third largest operator in South Korea, is said to have attained a download speed of 300 megabytes per second by adding bandwidths of both connections.
This type of technology is called LTE-U or "LTE without a licence" and in practice serves to make smart devices using fourth-generation 4G or LTE data, combining frequency bands of this network from the Wifi networks available in the spectrum.
"We hope that users can have access to an intelligent device with this technology towards the second half of 2015," said a spokesperson for LG Uplus, an LG group subsidiary, one of the largest conglomerates in South Korea.
The operator claims to be the first company in the world that has succeeded in combining two or more frequency bands of different networks to increase bandwidth.
It also said the LTE-U system increases current speeds of data transmission by up to four times through LTE and could even offer fifth generation or 5G speeds.
South Korean company Samsung Electronics announced Wednesday that it had successfully achieved 5G transmission speed of 7.5 gigabytes per second, about 30 times faster than the current 4G networks.
