The central government on Tuesday approved a land transfer deal between the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the state government of Bihar for the expansion of Patna airport.

The decision was taken by the Union Cabinet which met here under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to the Cabinet decision, 11.35 acres of land at Patna will be transferred to the state-owned firm. This will be done through the exchange of equivalent area of land belonging to AAI at Anisabad.

"The proposed land at Patna airport will be used for expansion of the airport and construction of new terminal building along-with other associated infrastructures," the Union Cabinet said in a statement.

"The state government has also agreed in principle for transfer of the land."

The Union Cabinet elaborated that the expansion plan envisages construction of a new terminal building.

The existing terminal building at Patna airport was built for a capacity of 0.5 million passengers per annum, whereas currently 1.5 million passengers use the facility annually.

"The new terminal building will be having a capacity of three million passengers per annum which will not only enhance the airport capacity but also provide convenience to general public," the statement added.
