The Union Cabinet on Wednesday extended the implementation phase of the Crime and Criminals Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) Project for another year, an official release said.
"The extension would help in achieving the remaining objectives of the project comprehensively. The maintenance phase of the Project will continue till 2022 as approved earlier," the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) said in a release.
CCTNS is a Mission Mode Project under the National e-Governance Plan of the Indian government that aims at creating a comprehensive and integrated system for policing through adoption of principle of e-Governance.
In last one year, through the project, more than 83 per cent police stations in the country entered 100 per cent First Information Reports (FIR) through CCTNS software.
CCTNS has received around 120 lakhs FIRs and all the crime records since 2004 have also been migrated to its database. In all, around seven crore records were now available in the national crime database.
When fully functional, the system is expected to create a reliable network connecting all police stations in the country and will have a National Crime and Criminal database which will be accessible to all the investigating officers across the country.
The project was approved by the CCEA in June 2009 with an allocation of Rs 2,000 crore to create a nationwide networking infrastructure for evolution of IT-enabled-state-of-the-art tracking system around "Investigation of crime and detection of criminals".
