China expects Mongolia to keep its promise of not inviting the Dalai Lama again after the Tibetan leader's visit to the country caused tensions between Beijing and Ulaanbaatar.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Tuesday had a telephonic conversation with his Mongolian counterpart Tsend Munkh-Orgil and hoped Mongolia had learnt its lesson, the ministry said.
The Mongolian minister expressed regret over the visit and promised that Ulaanbaatar will make efforts to improve relations with Beijing, according to an official Chinese statement cited by EFE news agency.
After the Dalai Lama's visit in November 2016, China cancelled several bilateral meetings and imposed new export taxes on Mongolian goods, besides making it tougher for Mongolian cargo trucks to enter Chinese territory.
The Tibetan spiritual leader, who fled Tibet after a failed uprising in 1959 and has been living in India, is seen as a secessionist by Beijing.
China is Mongolia's main trading partner.
