Classic language status for Manipuri demanded

Manipuri populated areas in Bangladesh, Myanmar and the North Eastern region, especially Assam, Tripura and Manipur, observed the 25th Manipuri Language Day on Saturday and demanded making Manipuri a classic language.

It was on August 20, 1992 that the Manipuri language was included in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution.

Several speakers at the functions held in Manipur, Assam and Tripura expressed their disappointment over the non-printing of the Manipuri script in the Indian currencies.

From last year the students are allowed to appear in examinations in the Manipuri script.

They also demanded making Manipuri a classic language since it meets all the criteria.

Though the Manipuri language in Bengali script was included in the Constitution the government had recognised the Manipuri script in 1980 which was replaced by the Bengali one in the 18th century.

Several speakers suspected a hidden agenda behind the non-printing of the Manipuri language in the currencies. The language was recognised as the official one in 1997.

Literary organisations observed Manipur Language day in various parts of Manipur on the occasion. This has been the lingua franca of the state.

The population of Manipuris in Bangladesh, Myanmar and some districts of Assam and Tripura is considerable. It belongs to the Indo-Tibeto Burman family.
