The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Saturday made a clean sweep in the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) election winning all the four posts with spectacular margins.
The candidates of the ABVP, student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), won the post of president, vice president, secretary and joint secretary. This has come after almost 18 years when they had last won the DUSU polls in 1997.
The post of president was won by Mohit Nagar, who got 20,718 votes. The post of vice president has won by Parvesh Malik with 21,935 votes.
After his win, Mohit Nagar, the new DUSU president said, "I am really happy. Students chose us because we tirelessly fought against the controversial four-year programme and got it removed."
Kanika Shekhawat won the secretary's post by netting 18,617 votes and the post of joint secretary was won by Aashutosh Mathur who got 23,133 votes.
"As I am a woman I am going to work towards making the campus safe for women and increase bus facilities," an exhilarated Shekhawat said after her win.
National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress, trailed second in all four posts followed by the left-wing All India Students' Association (AISA).
The vote share of AISA has increased by huge margin compared to previous years.
Last year ABVP had bagged three posts while NSUI had taken the joint secretary's post.
After the win, the winning candidates were showered with rose and marigold garlands. Their supporters danced to drum beats and took out a march to celebrate the victory amid tight security by Delhi police.
Standing atop the famous Swami Vivekananda statue, the winning candidate thanked the students of the varsity for giving them a clear mandate.
