Committed to improving border management: PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Wednesday the government was taking every step to fortify its international borders and coastal areas and constructing and upgrading roads in difficult terrain along the border with China, Nepal and Bhutan.

"We are committed to improving border management and coastal security," the prime minister told the Chief Ministers' Conference on internal security.

"We are also continuing implementation of the Border Area Development Programme and the phase two of the Coastal Security Scheme," he added.

Giving details of the steps being taken on guarding India's borders and improving coastal security, Manmohan Singh said: "Greater focus and priority than before is being given to the work of fencing and construction of additional border outposts along the India-Bangladesh border."

"The construction and upgradation of roads along the India-China, India-Nepal and India-Bhutan borders as well as the development of integrated check posts on the India-Pakistan and India-Nepal borders" are some of the border management projects initiated by the government, the prime minister added.
