The Congress Tuesday appealed to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to allow parliament to function and pass important legislations like food security and land acquisition bills.
"Food security and land acquisition are two important bills for welfare of the people. They have been drafted after long consultation process with state governments and I appeal to BJP to let parliament function and pass these bills," said Congress spokesperson Sandeep Dikshit.
"BJP has said that they are a responsible opposition and allowed finance bill to pass. If they are a responsible opposition, then they should allow these two welfare bills to be passed and continue to fight with government over other issues," he said.
Dikshit said the government is making all efforts to bring the opposition on board to pass the bills.
"Parliamentary affairs minister (Kamal Nath) is talking to opposition and trying to get them on board," he said.
Dikshit, however, said if not passed, the government would bring them up again in monsoon session.
Both houses have seen repeated disruptions by opposition parties over the allocations of coal blocks and 2G spectrum.
The BJP has said it will not let parliament function till Prime Minister Manmohan Singh resigns over the alleged involvement of his office in the irregularities in the allocation of coal blocks and 2G spectrum.
The BJP has also demanded resignation of Law Minister Ashwani Kumar for vetting CBI report on coal allocation and Railway Minister P.K. Bansal over the railway bribery case.
