Punjab's opposition Congress Monday complained to the Election Commission against the state's ruling Shiromani Akali Dal holding a political rally during the Hola Mohalla celebrations in the Sikh holy town of Anandpur Sahib next week.
In the complaint to the poll panel, Punjab Congress president Pratap Singh Bajwa contended that allowing any political party to hold a political conference during a religious event was violation of the election model code of conduct.
Bajwa said that the Akali Dal was planning to hold the conference on March 16 near the historic Gurdwara Keshgarh Sahib in Anandpur Sahib town, 80 km from here, during the Hola Mohalla celebrations.
Punjab's 13 Lok Sabha seats go to polls April 30.
Bajwa said that the venue of the political conference was close to the Sikh religious shrine. He said that the shrine is visited by lakhs of devotees during the Hola Mohalla celebrations.
The Congress leader sought an immediate ban on the Akali Dal conference.
