Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said writing the constitution of a country like India must have been "really challenging" as people of different beliefs and habits lived in the country.

He said respect comes "naturally" for those who wrote such a great constitution for the country within three years.

"Many individuals worked hard for it and their contribution in making the constitution is immense," he said in the Lok Sabha while participating in a discussion on 'Commitment to the Constitution' as part of the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Bhimrao Ambedkar.

He said Ambedkar was one of the great people of the country who worked on it and came up with such a "perfect constitution", which still, after so many years, fits the bill.

"It ensures dignity for every individual and unity for the country," Modi said, adding that in today's time when the lawmakers have to make a law, it is never perfect, the way the constitution has been for so many years.

"If a law is made after much deliberation, it is never perfect and has to come up for amendment in the very next session of the parliament," he said.

"Ambedkar's role in framing the constitution of the country cannot be ignored, but there are others too who worked and contributed for it," he said.

The prime minister said it could actually have been a tough job to come up with a constitution for the country with so many diversities.

Modi said it was parliamentarians' duty to take the spirit of the constitution among the people.
