The Delhi government will not release payment for local development work until the residents are satisfied with the quality of work, an official said on Saturday.
The announcement came after Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia reviewed various development works in his constituency Patparganj where he asked residents of the area about the quality of work.
"Wherever people expressed satisfaction, he ordered for payment to be released," said a government statement.
"At one location, where residents expressed displeasure with the work, Sisodia asked officials not to release the payment to the contractor till work is done to the satisfaction of local residents."
During Sisodia's visit to the area, contractors and engineers of concerned departments were also present.
He later wrote on his Facebook page that he always distributes pamphlets detailing the development work to be conducted in a neighbourhood before the work starts.
"The pamphlets also have contact numbers of the contractor and the concerned engineer. Due to this, people force the contractor to do the work based on what is detailed on the pamphlets," Sisodia wrote.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the model needs to be replicated across Delhi through "mohalla sabhas".
"Excellent. This needs to be institutionalised now through 'mohalla sabhas'," Kejriwal tweeted along with a video showing Sisodia talking to Patparganj residents.
