Court accepts CBI closure report of 2010 CWG lawn bowl case

A Delhi court has accepted the CBI closure report in a case of alleged irregularities related to laying of the synthetic turf for the lawn bowl event during the 2010 Commonwealth Games here.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had on September 30, 2013, filed a closure report stating that allegations levelled in the first information report (FIR) were not substantiated during investigation in the graft case.

The graft case was lodged against some officials of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and Delhi Development Authority (DDA) who were public servants and attached to the CWG project.

Special CBI Judge Ajay Kumar Jain, in his order delivered on Wednesday, accepted the closure report and said: "Perused closure report, statement of witnesses and documents enclosed with closure report."

"After giving a thoughtful consideration to all, I found that the investigation has reached the logical end and no evidence surfaced against any of the accused people alleged in the FIR, so closure report is accepted."

The court directed the investigating officer of the case to return the documents to the authorities from whom these were seized.

According to the CBI, the then officers of CPWD and Delhi Development Authority attached to the mega event during 2009-2010 entered into a criminal conspiracy with Jubilee Sports Technology Limited.

The probe agency said the officials committed criminal misconduct by abusing official positions of public servant in awarding contract to Jubilee Sports Technology Limited, New Delhi.

It was alleged that the officials caused wrongful gain to Jubilee Sports and loss to the government.

It was also alleged that the then public officials dishonestly showed undue favour to Jubilee Sports by awarding the contract on inflated costs.
