The Delhi High Court Friday directed former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala, who has been out on bail after being sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment in the teachers recruitment scam case, to surrender at Tihar Jail before Oct 17.
Justice Siddharth Mridul took note of the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) submission that Chautala attended a rally in Haryana's Jind town Thursday and warned Chautala it would set up a medical board to examine his health and submit a report.
At this, Chautala's lawyer assured that the Haryana leader will surrender before Oct 17.
Chautala, who was first granted interim bail on May 21, 2013, has been getting extension of bail on the ground that he was currently admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon due to poor health. Out of prison on bail on health grounds, the Indian National Lok Dal chief Thursday addressed a political rally for about 10 minutes in Jind.
A special CBI court here Jan 22, 2013, sentenced Chautala, son Ajay Chautala and eight others to 10 years in jail.
One convict was sentenced to five years in jail, while 45 others were each handed out four-year jail terms in the case.
The Chautalas and the other accused were found guilty of illegally recruiting 3,206 junior basic trained teachers in Haryana in 2000 when Om Prakash Chautala was the chief minister.
