Delhi Police Tuesday presented awards to 30 people for helping the force in averting crime and nabbing criminals in the national capital.

"Those who helped us were all from different backgrounds, but they came together and joined hands in catching the criminals. This shows the true spirit of true citizens," Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi said after awarding them with certificates of appreciation and mementos.

He added: "The 85,000-strong Delhi Police force is not sufficient to ensure security to 1.8 crore people. It can only be possible when such bravehearts come together and support us in averting crime".

Bassi said he was thankful to all the 30 people, who included six women.

Gurmeet Kaur, a 25-year-old resident of west Delhi's Tilak Nagar area told IANS how she successfully chased two motorcycle-borne youth who had snatched her chain.

"I noted the bike's registration number and immediately informed the police. Meanwhile, I started chasing them in an auto-rickshaw until I got stuck at an intersection. There, a man on a scooter offered help and I finally managed to nab one of the snatchers," she said.

The awards function was held at the India Habitat Centre here.
