A quack beheaded his wife with an axe in his home and later attempted suicide Thursday morning, police said.

Aman Kumar Kar committed the crime at about 5 a.m. when his wife Deepa, 42, was sleeping with his niece, Manisha, 14, in Tughlakabad in south Delhi's Govindpuri area.

He then ran to the second floor of his house when Manisha raised an alarm after witnessing her aunt's murder.

Police said Aman locked himself in a room and tried to hang himself but the cord broke. He then consumed a poisonous substance.

In the meantime, neighbours gathered after hearing Manisha's cries and informed the police.

By the time police arrived, Aman was unconscious and froth was coming out of his mouth.

He was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where his condition is stated to be critical.

Police said Aman and Deepa were to finalise their divorce Friday.

Aman had bought land in West Bengal which was the cause of tension between the couple as his wife wanted it to be registered in her name.

An Odisha resident, Aman married Deepa who hailed from West Bengal, five years ago. It was the second marriage for both of them.

Manisha, in her statement, told police that she tried to stop her uncle but failed.
