Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh Tuesday once again backed his colleague Shakeel Ahmed who had accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh of communal politics.

"If Shakeel Ahmed has said something, he must have weighed it before saying it," Digvijaya Singh told reporters here.

Party General Secretary Ahmed's tweet Sunday alleging that the banned terror outfit "Indian Mujahideen was formed after the 2002 Gujarat riots" stirred a political storm with the BJP reacting sharply to it.

In a fresh tweet Tuesday, Ahmed said that his comment was based on the National Investigation Agency report which was quoted in the media.

Digvijaya Singh said: "I have not seen the report. He must have seen the report, that is why he said what he said".

Asked about BJP's attack on the Congress over the issue, Digvijaya Singh said: "The BJP stance has always been different from ours. We cannot have the same stance".

Earlier, putting his weight behind Ahmed Monday, Digvijaya Singh had said: "Religious fundamentalism is at the root of terrorism".
