Ahead of the parliamentary elections, the police have seized contraband goods and liquor worth around Rs 2 crore in March, an official said on Thursday.
The police seized 166 kg marijuana, 7 kg charas, 120 gram smack, 1.8 kg methadone (de-addiction drug) worth over Rs 1 crore and registered 51 FIRs.
A total of 8,488 bottle of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), 15,575 country-made liquor and 2,835 beer bottles were also recovered.
Shamsher Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Gurugram, said that the items were smuggled from Madhya Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
"We have identified places known for illegal trade of contrabands and beat constables are instructed to keep an eye on suspicious activities in their respective areas," Singh said.
Though they don't have a fix position, the operators sometimes sale the items in metro pillars shade near Sikandarpur, Sector 56, Golf Course Extension road, MG road and other areas of the city, said a source.
They keep changing their location in a bid to avoid being arrested, the source added.
Singh said that in context of liquor smuggling, "informers and CID (Crime Investigation Department) officials are alerted to keep an eye on wholesale outlets and alert concern officials about suspicious activities".
Liquor prices in Haryana are lower than thoese in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Traders buy cheap liquor from Gurugram in bulk and smuggle them into Delhi and Noida in Uttar Pradesh.
"We have initiated day as well as night domination on the streets of Delhi, especially on border areas, to detect illegal transportation of liquor. Officials have been asked to put barricades on roads and check proper documents and bills of goods loaded in carriers," Singh said.
